Self Assessment Essay

My writing skill has marked a significant growth in this semester in many ways, for example critical thinking, problem solving or communication. These are skills that some people think it’s not for writing but I think they play a crucial role in it. Early in the semester, I set my mind that I need it to improve my writing skill. I was worried because when semester started I wasn’t in the country so I was very anxious about missing the first day of class. I believe that no one can ever be 100% perfect at writing. While some individuals may have a natural talent, and others may acquire the essential skills needed for effective writing, there is always room for growth. Writing is an evolving craft, and there’s always a new word or expression waiting to be discovered. One of my goals in this essay was to challenge myself by incorporating a wider range of vocabulary.It was a success because I felt like there was a lot of time that I met a new vocabulary word in the consigne of the assignment. It was a challenging semester because I wasn’t expecting to do some assignments like the  job packet or product documentation. It was a bit challenging for both of those assignments for me. For the look of it they are easy topics but it requires critical thinking, knowing what you are assigned for and also a good understanding of the topic. I feel like doing the job packet helps me deal with the rest of the assignment, especially the research essay. Even though I did face some challenges there. Anyway, what are the challenges that I mentioned and how did I face it using the learning objectives of the course. 

The first assignment was the job packet, it was a very interesting assignment. It was very surprising too. I was like why are we doing this? What is it for at first I kind of lost interest about it. Unfortunately, the assignment was kind of very challenging due to this question of what company you want to work for. I had a lot of companies on my mind but I always think about ConEdison but since the assignment requires research about the company you chose I was afraid that I might not have enough information about it. Moreover I was struggling in writing the paper itself. One of the parts of the assignment requires you to write about yourself which was the cover letter. I called it bragging about myself but yet I was thinking that lets not do that let me actually be truthful and consider as if it was real. No one wants to hire an inexperienced person, they want someone who knows and is very familiar with the job. However, after I wrote it one my classmate Anthony told me that you sound very difficult on yourself in the paper you want to write with confidence to convince them that you are a good fit for the position starting with your skills and qualities and I revised it using his advice . “Even though it was just feedback from a paper, it looks like really good advice to live on.”  He was the reason that I added this sentence. In that assignment, I learned to “develop and engage in the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes”, because sharing ideas or giving feedback one to another is actually a good idea  to connect with the topic you are working on and help you develop your ideas and engage with it. 

I will not call it  challenging but it was a bit tricky, the rhetorical situation analysis assignment. All assignments require thinking deeply but I can say it needs analysis, the reading annotated and also more importantly a clear understanding about the topic. I like to challenge myself that’s why I choose the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) reading. I chose it because maybe it was the most difficult one for me or maybe it was just difficult because I don’t have any knowledge about piloting. I struggle with reading. It wasn’t easy reading to fully understand the topic. It takes me a while to figure out what it is really about. Well there is a difference between knowing the context of a text and the content itself. Even though it does tell you the context of it but the content or the purpose of it you have to read and understand it in order to know. It’s not like I read the title, I know what it is about at least for me. However it was very funny when I understood it. It feels like I was having a chat  with my mind agreeing and disagreeing even though the thought came in the same brain. It’s kind of ironic but anyway this assignment helped me get through my own internal conflict inside my mind like “developing rhetorical thinking”. It helps me consider voice, audience, message, tone, attitude, and reception is crucial in both reading and writing. These elements work together to create effective communication, enhancing both comprehension and engagement. By using these aspects it helps me to connect with the text and know what message I am sending. 

Doing the product documentation helps realise how important the formulate and articulate stance is in writing. It helps me to express my thoughts by influencing others, and reflect on the complexities of the human experience. As humans we learn by doing things and the more we do it we get used to it and I was kind of afraid of our topic because I wanted to choose something that might not be familiar to my classmates but I didn’t want to oppose my classmates. During that project  I learned to “acknowledge others’ range of linguistic differences as resources”. Acknowledging the range of linguistic differences among individuals can serve as a valuable resource, promoting understanding and connection. By setting aside my original idea, I can allow room for others to express their thoughts, even when they diverge from my initial vision. This flexibility not only fosters a sense of teamwork but also creates an environment of mutual respect. It went smoothly and their ideas were actually great because we presented very well and everyone did their part as it was supposed to be. Moreover, during the product documentation I enhanced my “social aspect by writing and engaging in the collaborative process” by communicating with my teammates sharing ideas about the topic to make our work successful and more importantly make sure that we are on the same page.

I can say that I learn a lot in the class and I kind of level up during the research paper. Enhancing my knowledge and also using the sources playing around it to make it useful for what I needed it for. “Strengthening my source” was actually the best thing that kept giving me ideas. I feel like the more I strengthen them the more deeply I am getting into the topic. “Paraphrasing” strengthens your  comprehension. When I translate a source into my own words, I engage more deeply with the content, ensuring that I grasp the core messages. This process helps me to think of  the information and relate it to your existing knowledge. practice using various library resources, online databases, and the Internet to locate sources appropriate , I think it’s essential to adopt a strategic approach. By identifying the academic databases such as the Cuny library or the other site like JSTOR it was one the site I used.  I think Familiarizing myself with the search functionalities of these platforms. During the process I really improved as a writer and how to use my ressource and the importance of the analysis of the topic. It’s not only an assignment  but  all the assignments were helpful and helped me to improve. I feel like they all connected to each other and the previous assignment  kind of prepared you for the upcoming assignment and made it easy for you. 

It was a great semester and we worked together perfectly helping each other giving feedback, to improve our skills. I enjoy doing the collaboration because it connects you with people and also it gives ideas about your topic and gives you more strategies to improve. Lastly, a big thanks to our humble teacher who is too kind to prioritize our needs in the class and also our classroom. I kind of bothered her a lot about feedback about my papers but she is always there to help. She is really a big part of our improvement. I am really grateful for all the feedback.
